Probiotic

What do you know about probiotics and gut health? Doesn’t sound too glamorous, right? As we get older, many tend to gain weight, especially in the midsection. And I don’t know about you, but it is hard for me to lose weight now that I am approaching my retirement. Sometimes, however, weight gain and poor health can be attributed to our gut health.

Signs of a Healthy Gut

These are signs of a healthy gut. But these may be relative to each individual.

  • Regular, pain-free bowel movements – the definition of regular can vary from person to person. In other words, it may be normal for one person to have a bowel movement 4 times per week while another person may have a bowel movement 3 times per day. Bowel movements that are healthy should be easy to pass, smooth, and firm.
  • Mental clarity – your ability to concentrate and stay mentally alert is closely tied to gut health. Poor gut health may cause frequent brain fog, as you struggle to stay focused.
  • Consistent energy – it’s a good sign when your body consistently takes you through your day without needing naps or caffeine. Not only does this indicate that you are providing your body with the proper nutrients, but your body also absorbs the nutrients correctly. Digestion requires energy. When your digestive system isn’t functioning properly, it sends too much stored energy to the stomach or intestines, leaving you feeling tired and weak.

Additional Signs of a Healthy Gut

  • Healthy reactions to food and stress – The way your digestive system reacts to stress may reveal things about your gut health. Chronic stress and depression may alter the balance of bacteria in the digestive tract. This can increase inflammation and affect the body’s metabolic reaction to food creating digestive issues.
  • Normal amounts of gas and bloating – did you know that most healthy people pass gas up to 21 times per day and that is completely normal? Gas is a part of digestion. Releasing gas prevents it from building up in the intestines or stomach. But, as we know, excess gas leads to cramping, bloating, and discomfort whenever it is trapped.
  • Healthy bowel transit time – bowel transit time refers to the amount of time it takes for food to move from the mouth to the end of the digestive tract. In a healthy person, this generally takes 30 to 40 hours but can take up to 72 hours. Generally a good indicator is that you are having regular bowel movements.

It is just as important to know the signs of a healthy gut as the symptoms of an unhealthy one.

Maintain Balance with Probiotics and Gut Health

Stay hydrated as this helps your body break down foods more easily, preventing constipation. Consume the recommended daily amounts of fibre in your diet and start taking a quality probiotic. If you eat a lot of fried and processed foods, start swapping them for foods high in fiber and probiotics. Fiber reduces constipation, improving bowel transit time, while probiotics support healthy bacteria balance in the gut.

Friendly Foods plus Probiotics and Gut Health

Here is a list of some “Gut Friendly Foods” to add to your diet:

  • Legumes
  • Bananas
  • Leafy greens
  • Whole grain bread and pasta
  • Oats and barley
  • Yogurt and other probiotic-rich foods
  • Lean meats like fish, chicken, and turkey
  • Avocados

In addition, reduce stress and make sure to get enough sleep. Exercise regularly and always try to eat a well balanced diet.

Causes of “Unhealthy Gut Health”

Food Allergies or Sensitivity resulting in diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting to name a few.

An imbalanced diet can be your enemy. Your body needs a balance of nutrients to maintain your gut health. Too many foods and drinks containing sugar, artificial sweeteners, trans or saturated fats, and animal proteins can lead to digestive issues.

High stress levels over time can cause a bacterial imbalance in your gut, resulting in diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Smokers are more likely to experience acid reflux and peptic ulcers.

Certain medications may throw off the bacterial balance in your gut, triggering one of many digestive symptoms. Contact your physician if this should happen to you.
